God’s Scales Are Out of Balance

2 Corinthians 4:17 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

“For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.”

Did you know that God is not about equality? Uh-oh. Hackles are raised, but wait.

God is about relationship and partnership and sacrifice. His kind of relationship is not about equality but about balance. It’s each member bringing their strengths to play that repair any weaknesses. And the balance that we should seek is not supported by equality and ‘fair for both sides’ mentality – it’s supported and successful because of sacrifice.

You see, we can take many lessons from God – some seemingly easy and some that seem impossible. But here’s one that is pretty upside down and contrary to what we might expect: God’s scales are inaccurate! And it’s in your favor! Whatever you are going through; however heavy you perceive it to be – God calls it ‘light’ in comparison to what He will reward you with!

He just must not get it. Shouldn’t we get what we earn? But apparently God is such a generous and sacrificial God, that it would bring Him pleasure to lighten our load but make our reward ‘incomparably’ heavy!

Maybe you think that doesn’t sound like the ‘just’ God you know. Well, maybe you need a new understanding of justice. You see, justice is supposed to be about righting a wrong. And the biggest wrong is the misunderstanding about love and life and relationship. God’s justice is about righting that. God’s justice is about proving that love and life should always tip the scales! And surprisingly, though I bring so little to the table, He sees fit to heap an incomparable helping of blessing on me for it!

‘You’re affliction is light and brief, but your reward will be so heavy in comparison that you can’t possibly carry it all and it will be eternal!’ (2 Corinthians 4:17 paraphrased)

wow, right?
